Someone would be a candidate for a tummy tuck as opposed to just plain liposuction depending on their muscles. If the muscles of the abdomen have been stretched out, they need to be tightened if they have a lot of extra skin that needs to be removed, and liposuction just would not do the trick. We determine this at the time of the patient's consultation and discussions to determine whether or not they need liposuction or an abdominoplasty, tummy tuck, or a mini tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck is something that is utilized for patients who do not have a lot of extra skin, but have mostly bulging muscles and this can come from pregnancy, inactivity, and other causes. The mini tummy tuck leaves a small scar in the lower abdomen similar to a hysterectomy scar or cesarean section scar or a full abdominoplasty when the patient has a lot of extra skin requires an incision that goes from hip to hip. During that surgery, the muscles are tightened, liposuction is done in certain areas, and the excessive skin is removed. I believe that it is important for the patient to stay overnight in the hospital for this type of surgery. Some doctors send the patients home immediately afterwards; however, I believe that the ability to give the patient antibiotics, pain medication, and the intravenous fluids is very important to reduce the chances of complications. The hospitals have been very good in these areas in terms of giving the patient some extremely low reduced rate for an overnight stay because I think they too recognize the importance of the safety issue. My patients usually take a minimum of two weeks and most often three weeks before they are able to return to work. We do not want them doing any lifting or heavy straining or that type of activity for about three weeks afterwards. They can start to drive and drive themselves around within one to two weeks afterwards, but we really do not want any strenuous activities. They can get back to the gym in about six weeks where they can start to do aerobic activities, weight lifting type of activities, but even from three to six weeks, we do not want them doing that heavy gym workout.
