Another one of the most rewarding surgical procedures that I do is for male breast enlargement known as gynecomastia. We see young boys in their 13, 14, 15, 16 years old that are going to high school that would not take their shirt off at gym, they go swimming with their shirt on or a T-shirt on because they are so concerned, their posture is changed that their shoulders are slumped over to hide those breasts. It is nothing that they did wrong and 99% of the time it is not a hormonal imbalance or a weight problem, it is just that genetics placed larger breasts on them than other fellows, and with some of the techniques of liposuction surgery that we do now, we are able to remove the extra breast tissue with liposuction surgery with very tiny incisions, but even if there is a larger amount of breast tissue, I am still able to make an incision around the areola, which usually heals an unnoticeable scar and directly remove the extra breast tissue and it is so rewarding when the patient comes back to me and they are participating more in sports and they are okay to take their shirt off to go swimming. It is very rewarding when they come back with their parents, to see them walking and standing tall and proud of, of what they have become. The male breast reduction surgery is done in the hospital under anesthesia, but it is the same day surgical procedure. After the surgery is performed, the patient is placed in a binder or a type of garment to put compression on the area of the breast to reduce swelling and bruising and enhance the recuperation. Usually the patient has to wear the binder and garment type of clothing for about two weeks after the surgery.
