Rhinoplasty operation is something that is very common that was associated with plastic surgeons now for about 50 years. I do a lot of rhinoplasty surgeries, but I believe the preoperative consultation is extremely important. The use of the computer image is extremely important as well because it is very difficult for the patient to explain to me exactly what they would like their nose to look like. The nose is a very three-dimensional structure on the body and the ability to show the patient before and after computer images helps me to determine how extreme the rhinoplasty has to be. Sometimes, we can just do a rasping or filing of the nasal bones, sometimes we just have to resculpt or recontour the cartilages of the nasal tip, or sometimes we have to reduce the bump on the nasal bone and also reposition those bones with what we call an infracture to get the results that the patient is looking for. I think it is my goal to try to make the patient’s nose look natural to fit into their particular facial features and to fit into their image of what they like to look like, and it really helps them and me to prepare the surgical procedure by doing the computer imaging and allowing them to help participate in what they would like to look like afterwards. After rhinoplasty surgery, the patient usually has a tape, possibly a cast on. They might or might not have packing of the nose, sometimes we can avoid packing depending on the exact procedure that we do. The patient would come back about a week after the surgery, and the tape and the cast and any packing would be removed, and at that time I usually re-tape the nose and sometimes put a cast back on. The patient will immediately see a change, but the final results for rhinoplasty take approximately a year to see. There is a lot of changes and swelling and contouring that go on over that period of time and the changes in the nose just keep getting better and better as the swelling goes down and it continues to reshape itself.
