The blepharoplasty surgery, which is also known as an eye lift or some other lay terms along those lines is the removal of extra skin and fat from the upper lids and from the lower lids. I think it is important that patients and doctors to recognize that eyelids do not exist by themselves. The eyebrows often times have an effect on what appears to be extra skin for the upper eyelids, so the physician, a plastic surgeon, really needs to go over with the patient carefully in the examination and the analysis of what these different components have or contribute to the condition of extra eyelid skin and then determine which procedure is best for the patient and what that look is going to be like afterwards, and often times with the help of computer imaging, we can show befores and afters of elevation of the brows or just plain removal of the extra upper eyelid skin, so the patient can have an idea of what these differences will do for them. The lower eyelids, we usually take out the fat from inside the eyelid itself, so there is no external incision. The only time we use external incisions now is if there is an extreme amount of extra skin, but I rather tighten this skin with either chemical peel or laser while removing the fat from the inside of the eyelid, so there is no external incisions, and these conditions that we usually treat with the eyelid surgery is the puffiness, the bagginess, the extra skin that hangs over the eyelids and it sometimes even impairs the patient’s vision. With blepharoplasty surgery, there is very minimal discomfort following the surgery. We have the patients ice their eyes and they usually take very minor analgesics for the first day or two, and usually after that, they take nothing. With the blepharoplasty surgery, the sutures the usually removed in four to five days, and usually can apply makeup in about five to seven days, and many patients will be back to work within a week or so. The final results; however, are not seen until about three or four months, but the changes are immediately apparent, but it keeps getting better over a period of time.
